Inom molekylär paleontologi undersöker man med hjälp av kemiska och spektrometriska metoder ursprung, evolution och egenskaper hos utdöda arter som bevarats som fossil. Målet är att erhålla molekylär information om biomolekyler som förekom i organismerna medan de levde. Tillsammans med den ansvarige forskaren Johan Lindgren ansvarar jag för det nya molekylär paleontologilaboratoriet vid Geologiska institutionen i Lund. Mitt arbete omfattar produktion av både syntetiska och biologiska referensmaterial samt kemisk analys av fossila prover. De huvudsakliga tekniker som används är vanliga kemiska metoder t.ex. extraktioner, kromatografi, kristallisationer och diverse analystekniker t.ex. NMR och IR spektroskopi.
Molecular paleontology aims at elucidating the origin, evolution and characteristics of ancient species, preserved in the fossil record, using chemical and spectrometric methods to extract molecular information on biomolecules present in the organisms while they were alive. Together with the principal investigator Johan Lindgren I am responsible for setting up and running the new molecular paleontology laboratory at the Department of Geology. My work includes production of both synthetic and biological reference materials as well as chemical analysis of fossil speciemens. The main techniques used are standard chemical methods including extractions, chromatography, crystallizations as well as various analytical techniques such as NMR and IR spectrospcopy.
