The terrestrial silicon (Si) cycle determines the amount of Si transported to the oceans. In this study we use Si isotopes measured in diatoms to show how human activity influences the Si budget of Lake Tiefer See (Germany) within the last 4300 years. Deforestation and crop harvest in the catchment are the dominant processes altering Si fluxes on centennial time scales.
